How to Prep for a Garage Cleanout

For a lot of households, the garage becomes the place things go when nobody knows what to do with them. Boxes from the last move, a treadmill nobody uses, leftover building materials, kids' bikes they've outgrown — it adds up until the car hasn't fit in years. A cleanout can give you that space back, and a little prep beforehand makes the whole process faster and far less stressful.

1. Decide what you want the space to do

Before you pull anything out, picture the finished garage. Do you want to park one car or two? Set up a workbench? Have a clear area for bikes and sports gear? Having a goal makes it much easier to decide what earns its spot and what doesn't.

2. Block out time and get help

Even a modest garage can take longer than you expect. Set aside a morning or a full day, ideally when family members who own some of the stuff can be there to make decisions. Pick a day with decent weather so you can spread items out on the driveway.

3. Set up sorting zones

Use tarps, tape or labeled boxes to create simple categories on the driveway:

• Keep — items you use and want back in the garage.
• Donate or sell — usable things that someone else could enjoy.
• Haul away — broken, worn-out or unwanted items.
• Belongs elsewhere — things that should live in the house, shed or attic.

Try to touch each item once and make a decision. If you're stuck on something, a "maybe" box with a deadline can keep things moving.

4. Watch for items that need special handling

Garages often hold things that shouldn't go in a regular trash load, such as old paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, propane tanks, batteries and some electronics. Set these aside separately. El Dorado County and nearby cities offer household hazardous waste drop-off options; check with your county or city for current locations and what they accept. Many junk haulers, including us, can't take certain hazardous materials, so it helps to sort them out early.

5. Protect what matters

Before the cleanout, pull aside important papers, photos, keepsakes and anything valuable. Label them clearly or move them into the house. If a crew is helping, walk through with them and point out anything that's staying.

6. Make it easy to load

Clear a path from the garage to the driveway and make sure there's room to park a truck close by. If you have large items — old fridges, freezers, furniture, exercise equipment — mention them ahead of time so the right number of people and the right equipment show up.

7. Clean before you put things back

Once it's empty, take the chance to sweep, knock down cobwebs and check for leaks or pest issues. This is also a good time to add shelving, wall hooks or overhead storage so the space stays organized.

8. Keep it from filling up again

A few habits help: give every category a home, keep a donation bin handy and do a quick sweep of the garage every season. It's much easier to maintain a clean garage than to dig out a packed one.
